Evil Warriors - Schattenbringer

Evil Warriors
Schattenbringer

EVIL WARRIORS is an “aggressive Blood Metal” band based out of Leipzig, Germany. Following the release of two full-lengths, they present their EP “Schattenbringer” here, which contains four tracks. Active since 2007, there was a seven-year gap between their two full-lengths. Let’s get down to the music, shall we?

“Fliege” leads off the album. There is a wall of guitars that hits you out of the gates, with thunderous drumming. It settles into a steadier groove, but the vile vocals don’t make an appearance until close to the half-way mark. They consist mostly of screams. “Wahrheit” is over nine minutes in length. The guitars venture out a bit here, creating a very harrowing sound on the upper ranges of the notes. Again, the vocals are mostly horrid screams. The pace holds steady throughout.

“Schattenbringer” is eight-and-a-half-minutes in length. The pace is hastened a bit, but that thick wall of guitars is ever-present. It slows just a bit to let the evil sounds seep into your soul, and then returns to that previous sound, with more blood-curling screams. “-“ is a near 22-minute closer. Opening with some eerie guitar tones, it really builds an atmosphere of what is to come. I am expecting pure horror. The build-up is almost too much. Then, I realize, this is the entirety of the track…22 minutes of wicked atmosphere that just hangs out there.

Overall, it was a bit tough to rate the EP, as it essentially only had three tracks. But it’s old school, FWOBM sort of sound. I have to say, it’s rather boring, as thousands of bands are out there still doing this very thing. I like a lot of Black Metal, but it has to at least challenge me and be a bit outside the genre boundaries, which can be very narrow when you are talking about traditional Black Metal.
