Expedition - A Good Day to Die

A Good Day to Die
by Sarah Chebaro at 06 June 2022, 3:22 PM

When I first heard EXPEDITION I thought it was just another thrash metal band trying to make a name for itself. Then I dug deeper and realized these guys are young, judging from their pictures, and apparently have worked hard before releasing “A Good Day to Die”. Coming all the way from Donegal, Ireland these young lads have stepped into the thrash metal scene.

The first thing I need to say is that the tracks on this album are a bit long for a first album release and from such a young band. Their first track “Death and Conquer” really sound like old-school metal with a simple guitar riff and light cymbal play. I expected a little more from the song and especially the vocals from Boyl. He has potential but it seems a bit mismatched with the music.

Good Day to Die” has a very powerful entrance as the second track on the album. I would’ve started off the album with this one as it really showcases true thrash metal tunes. Beautiful guitar, galloping drum rolls, and a beautiful mid-song guitar solo. The only tiny critique I can give is the song stretches to almost 7 minutes and starts to be a little repetitive. “Death Wish” the final track on the album and also possibly one of my favorite ones has the true angry thrash metal feeling. Ewan’s drumming is ace, Boyl’s vocal fits in perfectly and the powerful guitar chords work like a charm.

Repent” is one of my least favorite tracks. It sounded like a band that is trying a bit too hard. It’s missing a lot of factors of what makes thrash metal, well thrash metal. “Within the Shadows” had beautiful guitar riffs at the start, which really gets me excited, but left me hanging as the vocals kick in. I expected stronger vocals from Boyl. but that wasn’t delivered.

I need to remind people once again that EXPEDITION is a young band and it’s definitely a bold move for their first album. There are a few strong thrash metal bands coming from Ireland that they can perhaps get some inspiration from such as SINOCENCE, ACID AGE and XERO.

Apart from all of that, this young band has a lot of potential and ambition to become something huge. As this is their first album they should take it as a learning curve to tweak a few things in their music stronger vocals, less lengthy songs (for now), and a little less chaos.
