Fless – Frenzied Bloodlust underneath a Black Moon

Frenzied Bloodlust underneath a Black Moon
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 09 December 2019, 8:50 AM

FLESS is a Canadian Black Metal band based out of Edmonton, Alberta. They apparently, as many Black Metal bands do, prefer to remain anonymous. With no Facebook page, and very few Bandcamp followers, this fledgling band just put out their debut album, with two lengthy tracks.

“Frenzied Bloodlust underneath a Black Moon” is the first track, and it’s close to sixteen minutes in length. It opens with gentle keys and a bit of dissonance in the music. From there comes in a screechy guitar sound and the vocals are buried in the background. The production is awful. It sounds like it was recorded on a four-track in someone’s basement. Yeah, it’s “True Kvlt” Black Metal, but I’m not even sure it registers as music. The riff does change every now and again, and there is a lengthy ambient passage, but this is as close to pure noise as you can get.

“Vampyric Drain through Hypnotic Force” opens with bell strikes that echo, announcing the coming of something nefarious. Some dissonant guitar notes follow. It is indeed hypnotic, as the title suggests, but those overly dissonant guitar notes paint a bleak landscape. Another long ambient passage occupies the later part of the song. Overall, this was weird music for me. I love most Black Metal, but it’s difficult to champion much here. Droning noise is about the best way I can describe the album, and as I mentioned, it barely registers as music. How they got signed to a record label is also a mystery for me. But, perhaps there are people out there who like this sort of thing, so to each his own.
