Foot – You Are Weightless

You Are Weightless
by Fred “Cage” Bonanno at 19 July 2022, 9:12 PM

Helmed by guitarist, vocalist and creative force, Paul Holden, and backed by an ever-changing cast of talented confidents. FOOT have just released their fourth studio album “You are Weightless”. It was released in June 2022. He was ultimately joined by guest musicians Jack Eddie, Dave Pemberton, James McGuffie and Tom Thomas to complete the foundation of this stoner rock and grunge project, hailing from Melbourne, Australia. With a little funk and psychedelia thrown into the mix to create a truly contemporary sound, and following in the footsteps of ALICE IN CHAINS, DINOSAUR JR and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, that challenge social commentary and grand visions.

The album opens with “Bitter”, a catchy tune reinforced by Paul Holden’s balanced and vehement vocals side kicking his slick smooth guitar licks, a fast tempo peaks with nice tight harmonies and an engaging mellow guitar solo. “Caged Animal” starts out slightly heavier than its predecessor as it swirls into a sedated tempo but quickly regains steam with keyboards complimenting the edgy guitar riffs. A true stoner sound is achieved on “Fire Dance”, a song about the frustration of the social media making stars out of nobodies “just watch me light a fire without a flint”, hits home with low keyed and somber vocals over heavy bold drumbeats with several tempo twists that maneuver through grooving guitar riffs, Precise and tight harmonies on “Gold Lion” married to the echoing vocals and simplistic guitar licks that eventually give way to a beefy 70’s psychedelic ending. “I’ll be just Fine” leads with an impressive reverberating guitar lick with a heavy dose of thick and meaty riffs encompassed by Paul Holden’s rustic vocals and a mix of fuzziness. The title track “You are Weightless” has almost spoken vocals with a buzzing guitar feel that transitions from the bridge into a percussion and symphony-like aggressive finish. “Sacred” ends the album on a unique path that has a keyboard instrumental retro style finish with guitars fading in and out to create a melodic free flowing infectious jive climax.

To say the least, this is an intriguing and multi-layered album with varying and episodic twists.
Paul Holden’s vocals are at times full throttle and at times passionate and dreamy. There are nice keyboard interludes accompanying dynamic drum beats that blend wonderfully with the thick riffs and meaty bass lines. A very enjoyable album that hovers between edgy, funky, and pop.
