Four Star Revival - The Underdog

Four Star Revival
The Underdog
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 27 May 2017, 9:14 AM

FOUR STAR REVIVAL is a Rock/Metal band based out of Dayton, Ohio, USA, described as having “an early 80’s sound with a modern twist.” The band previously released their debut full-length “Knighs Of The Revival,” and this new EP they present here is entitled “The Underdog,” and contains five new tracks. The leading title track, “The Underdog,” is a gritty, fast moving track, complete with pig squeals at every turn of the riff. The vocals are low-to mid-range cleans, with a raspy edge. The sound drops off at about the half-way mark, with acoustic guitars and a darker twist. “Liar” has a dirty, garage band sound as Emrick croons “If you’re looking for trouble, you’ve come to the right place.”

“Rumors Of War” has tenuous opening riff, before building into something you might have heard on an early JUDAS PRIEST album. The focus is on the heaviness of the instrumentation and a long chorus, where backing vocal yells “HEY!” keep your attention to the rhythm of the track. “Broken” is a bit of a softer song on the album, with emotional melodies and focus on the lyrical content. “The Garden Of Good And Evil” closes the EP, with a swift, riff driven pace and a feeling of some of the bands you would have heard in the NWOBHM movement of the late 70’s/early 80’s. The bridge is well done and accentuates some of the darker themes of the song, before guitarist Bodine unleashes a furious solo, a-la Dave Murray, with prolific does of wah-wah.

“The Underdog” is a promising EP. It’s down home Heavy Rock, although not a sound that you have not hear before however. It’s Rock ‘N Roll as it was intended to be…easy listening, hard driving fuel that you can shake your fists and stomp your feel to. So, get out there and do it!
