Frequency - The Flow

The Flow
by Erika Kuenstler at 03 April 2014, 2:48 PM

Formed in 2006, FREQUENCY are a Spanish Metal band who have just released their second full-length album “The Flow”. Whilst labelling themselves as Death Metal, I would definitely say their music style is perhaps too melodic to be classified as such. At a stretch, Melodic Death Metal would be more accurate, but I would go as far as saying they fall more in the vein of Melodic Metalcore, reminiscent of bands such as KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and the later IN FLAMES era.

This album is an absolute monster, containing a total of 15 tracks with an hour’s play time. Starting off “Breathe” by slowly fading in with a beautiful guitar melody and a soaring violin, this is soon shattered by drums and heavily distorted guitars, which take a brief respite before galloping into the next track “Conjunction of Senses”. The screamy vocal style lends the music a Core-like feeling, with the clean vocals complementing the more melodic guitar riffs. Perhaps favourite tracks on the album are the songs “Blizzard” and “Of a Thousand Suns”, with their fast-paced riffage, relentless drumming, and unexpected and catchy vocals. With the final track “Expire”, the pace gets taken down again, with the soft acoustic melodies bringing the album back full circle.

Overall, “The Flow” is a solid album that is very easy to listen to. However, the sound quality is slightly fuzzy and the music itself is nothing earth shattering innovative or new, which is a pity, as the musicians are clearly talented and good at what they do. One thing I must say is this band very much reminds me of the gateway bands I used to listen to when I was just starting to get into Metal. If Death Metal bands like DECAPITATED are your kind of thing, then “The Flow” probably won’t be for you. But if you’re a fan of bands like IN FLAMES, or are looking for something to much lighter to ease you into the heavier side of music, then maybe give FREQUENCY a shot.
