G.E.N. - Manifesto

by Vasilis Odontidis at 08 July 2013, 10:52 AM

G.E.N. or for those who can decipher their name in the artwork with the Greek letters, it should be G(gee).Ξ(ksee).Π.(pee) is a band from San Diego, Chile and “Manifesto” is their first release in the form of an EP, a five track album that musically combines Post Rock with Death elements and a bit of groove.

The songs are medium paced and range from five to seven minutes. The structures change between distorted guitars and groovy drums and abstract clean guitars (like in ISIS). The lyrics are mainly English but they opt on “Se Oyen Gritos” (“Screams Are Heard” is the translation) for their mother language. Though Spanish never attracted me as a Metal language it seems to work well in that song. Out of the five songs, “Fate” is the one that impressed me most.

The compositions are good but still the band needs to work more with their material and mature more. Their performance is great however and helps in the final outcome of the songs. The vocals are so and so. While the clean ones are ok, the brutal are sometimes weak and out of place. G.E.N. have made their first small step in the world of music with the “Manifesto” EP. Their music without being jaw breaking is an honest effort and shows that the band could get even better in the future.
