GADGETS SONS is a Death/Thrash/Groove Metal band from Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is the duo’s self-titled debut, released by
WormHoleDeath Records on April 22, 2022. On first listen, I say holy shit, this record is unbelievable. Not only does the group blend all the styles that I have previously mentioned (according to themselves, I might add), but I also detect hints of Metalcore and Sludge Metal. Thus, the band that I would say these guys sound the most like is a more toned down and accessible version of
SOILENT GREEN, with added glimmers
SEPULTURA,
EARTH CRISIS,
PANTERA and
TESTAMENT. This is pure, balls-out metal that plans on punching you in the nose and smashing a bottle over your head, and I love it.
Charles Ian Ireland’s role as the band’s Renaissance-man pays off hugely for the group. His riffs are punchy, rhythmic and definitely brutal.
“Song One” in particular demonstrates his picking prowess, while
“Perrrlka” shows that he can play a mean solo when he wants to break one out. His vocal styles range from drill sergeant-esque Hardcore Punk shouting and horrifying Black Metal shrieks (especially on the track
“Volcanic”) to absolutely brutal death metal growls and slightly melodic extreme singing that reminds me of
GOJIRA’s
Joe Duplantier. And his bass playing, while not flashy by any means, provides an important anchor for the music to grow upon. And of course, last been at least,
Phillip Eyad Mofadi’s drumming is machine-like and incredible.
Other highlights from the record include
“Blasted,” an astonishing album opener that thrusts you headfirst into the absolute madness that awaits on the rest of the album;
“You and I,” a beautiful instrumental piece that breaks up the track listing well; and
“IWBY,” which has my favorite riff on the whole album and is over way too soon. Overall, this album is a headbanger from start to finish, and is definitely one that I will come back to, which I don’t often do with these reviews if I’m being honest.
GADGETS SONS may not have the most unique sound out there, but they definitely have a highly enjoyable one. I can say with 100% certainty that this is a perfect album, and I can’t wait for their next release.
