Gaeleri - Gates of Rome

Gates of Rome
by Dave “That Metal Guy” Campbell at 26 November 2014, 3:57 PM

GAELERI is a Swedish Hard Rock Band, recently re-united to record this new album. Formed in 1992, the band has released three previous albums. “Gates of Rome” contains ten tracks. Upon completion of the album, I would say that it is pretty straightforward Rock and Roll that smacks of the time frame when it was originally created. They make good use of melody and vocal harmonies, with big, strong choruses. Anders’ versatile and vibrato-infused vocals really drive the sound here.  Some highlights on the album include the LED ZEPPELIN feel to the slow, rocking anthem “Queen of Time”, and the tender sensibilities of “Wannabe,” which has an emotional yearning to it. Unassuming in its approach, the harmonies catches you by surprise as they envelope you so sweetly. “Let Your Love Bleed” is another highlight on the album, with an old-school AEROSMITH type riff and a vamped up chorus. “Entertain You” might be the song with the strongest bottom end most traditional structure, with vocal melodies that remind me of the band KING’S X. The main riff in “No Boundaries” is easy listening and positive and has many lush layers along the way. “One Step Closer” is another slower building track that focuses on feel and mood and hits it hard again at the chorus. Closing the album is the song “Time Has Come”, which enters head-on with bombast and a thick wall of sound. It sounds representative of the band’s reunion in many ways, and to the revolution of this kind of old school Rock and Roll making a comeback in the industry. Overall, I find that I enjoy the band’s slower, more introspective numbers more than the anthemic rockers. This is not a re-invent the wheel kind of album; instead it delivers simple melodies and swinging riffs. There is variety here in tempo and rhythm as well.  Overall it is more of a hit than a miss.
