LED ZEPPELIN? Check. Cue psychedelic sci-fi cover painting. Check. In the old days, I’m sure it would have been a gatefold vinyl cover! The seven songs (just under 40 minutes, sticking to the time restrictions of yesteryear) prove these Seventies obsessed Austrians, when at their best (“Old Man Cry”), are a missing link between spacey HAWKWINDand Doom, the scales tipped in favor of the former. Think later day COUNT RAVEN.
However, only the misguided would consider this “Metal”,Hard Rock even being a stretch as the keyboards tend to dominate the guitar. The English lyrics are clear and minus any accent, although Alois Martin Binder tends to speak the words, rather than sing. An extraterrestrial concept album, most tracks are minimalistic and dreary, which is fine by me. “A Big Mistake”and the final chorus of the disc closing “The Mothership Is Coming”feature female accompaniment. “The Universe Will Understand”is a vintage protest song, airing all sorts of society’s ills with a hint of whiny Bob Dylan delivery. Definitely an acquired taste.
