General Surgery - Like An Ever Flying Limb

General Surgery
Like An Ever Flying Limb

The thing about Swedish Death Metal is the fact that it has established its own unique sound and by listening to any band you can usually tell if they are from Sweden or not. Without prior knowledge of GENERAL SURGERY I knew the production and tone of the riffs was reminiscent to that of Sweden and it turns out I was indeed correct, I have here for you a Goregrind band hailing from that magnificent country.

Even the title of this EP, “Like an Ever Flying Limb”, had an instant click in my head for DISMEMBER’s debut album, “Like An Ever Flowing Steam”. If you go back to GENERAL SURGERY’s 2006 debut album, “Left Hand Pathology” you can easily recognize this is a play on words of ENTOMBED’s classic “Left Hand Path”.

While GENERAL SURGERY pays homage to Swedish Death Metal bands I wouldn’t lump them in as a Swedish clone. From a few resources I have seen these guys are heavily influenced by the likes of CARCASS, reigning from the United Kingdom. Other well known U.K. giants are NAPALM DEATH and I can see the influences of Europe and Sweden coming together in the music of GENERAL SURGERY.

“Like an Ever Flying Limb” is by far the shortest EP I’ve heard clocking in a little past eleven minutes. Easy to listen to and easy to replay several times. It doesn’t get dull. It’s refreshing, new and as far as I can tell it’s a change in sound for them considering the work done in their sophomore album, “Corpus In Extremis: Analysing Necrocriticism” The drums are very intense, full on rage, previously Adde Mitroulis concentrated more on finding the right fills and calculating how to implement them artistically. Here it is aggression, beautiful non-stop blast-beats.  If you are a fan of COLDWORKER you’ll definitely love the drumming here as it’s similar in style. Vocals had the ferocious intensity of hardcore and Grindcore but also surrounding them were the brutal gore necrophilia entrapped backing vocals of  bassist Andreas Eriksson and the drummer Adde Mitroulis. Describing them in a one phrase I’d say “Scream Bloody Gore” fits the collective effort nicely.

I loved the sound. It was like a fusion between old school death metal but also the more modern version of blast beat concentrated Death Metal. As I mentioned before it had the Swedish production sound but also the Grindcore style of Europe. This felt like a concept EP. If you listen to the narration throughout the EP it connects together. It was a very philosophical dark album.
