Goats Of Doom - Shiva

Goats Of Doom
Shiva
by Andrew Harvey at 07 July 2021, 2:50 PM

GOATS OF DOOM are a black metal band from the regions of Nivala and Pohjois-Pohjanmaa in Finland. Originally formed by SCAREGOD and INASNUM who was the original drummer when the band came together in 2008. As the two founding members of the band, they went on to release three albums in 2012, 2015 and 2017 however 2017 saw the departure of their drummer. SCAREGOD continued on before the arrival of four new members whose names we only know by their initials as they remain anonymous.

The new lineup then presented to us “a new face, where the mysterious atmosphere of old was shot through with more surging aggression and bewitching melody’s: in essence a melodic blizzard”. Their eighth studio album, SHIVA was released in May this year and through their record label, Purity Through Fire in three different formats for listeners to choose from.

The album opens with the first track called “Ἀπōκάλυ” that features post punk styled guitar shredding through the mix. There is a suggestion that there could be two vocal lines accompanying the other instruments. The sustained guitar with sound effects is clearly evident. “Uljas Uusi Maailma” which mimics what we heard before, especially the black metal vocals too. “Luomiskertomus” stands out for the pulsating guitar and staggering vocals.

“Armon Jardot” is sparked by the alternative rock guitar part, not to mention the two vocal lines, which we heard before. “Korjuu” also seems to bring a slower tempo amalgamating guitar reverb and drums are pushed back in the mix, less noticeable. “Rotat” is a strong track featuring enjoyable guitar solos and the instrumental section which is quite nicely played. The final track of this album shares the same name of the album “Shiva” beginning with a sort of medieval intro together, with sound effects and the adrenaline rush of guitar + drums. Overall the album certainly has its moments with the orchestration with guitar + drums. The lyrical content deals with themes of satanism, misanthropy and lovecraftian.
