Gravefields – Embrace The Void Award winner

Embrace The Void
by Brian "Metal" Morton at 30 June 2019, 10:31 PM

GRAVEFIELDS is a two man band hailing from France and Egypt. We have Alan Hurley on all the instruments and programming and Thomas Blanc on vocals. This is the bands first album and it is one of the best freshman albums from a band I have ever heard. This band is for fans of HATE, HEDONIHIL and SWALLOW THE SUN. I personally think this is one of the best albums of the year so far and it will probably be in my top 10. The first song on the album is “Psychoactive Rites” which is a barrage of Black and Death Metal. These guys obviously know what they are doing and they are doing an immaculate job of it.

“Sulpur Injection” keeps up the insane brutality and mesmerizing beauty of the album. It’s not very often a band can make such a beautiful song like this. Once you hear it, you will understand my meaning. The instruments on this as well as the vocals are on par with the best metal bands out there. “Chemical Rampage” brings a whole new meaning to Blackened Death Metal. This songs construction is absolutely one of the best songs I have heard in a very long time. I have listened to this song on repeat for a few days now. Everything about this song is perfect.

“Mind Leech” goes into the realm of old school Black Metal but with phenomenal production. It’s songs like this that keep my faith in Blackened Death up. Some bands have tried it and failed miserably. I bet their live show is insane. “Voices Above” is an absolute banger. I really enjoyed the guitars on this track as well as the vocals. Thomas has one of those voices that was just made for this. Another thing I appreciate is the fact they never over use the damn snare drum. That is one thing I absolutely hate in a lot of Black or Death metal.

“The Devils Breath” came on and my jaw hit the floor. This one is just insane and all over the place in the best way possible. The next song “Psychonauts Inferno” reminds me of why I fell in love with metal in the first place. It’s a barrage of Black and Death Metal perfected. I couldn’t ask for more. I think this is one of the best songs on the album so far. I still can’t wrap my mind around the fact that it’s only two guys doing all of this. All I have to say is they are geniuses.

“Narcotic Warfare” is another of my favorites off the album. I personally don’t think they have a single song that I have a complaint about. The final song “Void” begins with an amazing scream and a full on assault on the ears from the instruments. I love how this song has a beat that you can either nod your head to slowly or you could just wreck your neck banging your head. I definitely had the Jens Kidman from MESHUGGAH face going on the entire song. This is also the longest song on the album, sitting at just over 7 minutes long. I have very high hopes for this band and I hope they end up touring the U.S. so I can see them.
