Great White - Rising (CD)

Great White
by Maria Kallinikou at 18 March 2009, 9:32 AM

This band from Los Angeles was formed back in 1978 and reached the peak of popularity in 1989 with the Once Bitten… album that became double platinum, while the self-titled track was nominated with a Grammy award. GREAT WHITE was back in 2007, after an absence of eight years and the tragic fire event in Rhode Island, with the album Back To The Rhythm.

Now, two years after, and having toured a lot lately, their new album Rising will be released in the middle of March. Created on a blues-Rock backbone it has been enriched with AC/DC's dirty attitude in All Or Nothin' , an AOR layer in Don't Mind, Shine and Only You Can Do, a sleazy pinch in Down On The Level,  and  some Rock 'n' Roll party mood in Let's Spend The Night Together. Above all, Rising is an easy-to-listen-to album where Michael Lardie loads it (partially overloads it) with keyboard melodies, and the voice of Jack Russell conjures up lots of memories from the past days.

The production guidelines seem to be the same for GREAT WHITE, and what else is to anticipate, when Michael Lardie has undertook the production since 1986? Overall this album, despite being a slight disappointment to fans who expect to find tunes like Stick It or Lady Red Light, is an adequate work.. Perhaps there are not many variations, but it has a melodic flow and each track succeeds well the previous one.

To the fans of the genre: by all odds, forget the preconceived notions and listen to it, maybe you will find it good. For the rest…
