Green King - Hidden Beyond Time Award winner

Green King
Hidden Beyond Time
by Brynn K. StarDew at 11 January 2023, 7:29 AM

Finnish Metal Band Green King started making demos in 2015 and now they return to us older and wiser. Songs like “Gates of Annihilation” and “GodKiller” seem heavily influenced by bands like Pantera. This kind of metal will definitely make you start headbanging, just be careful you don’t break your headphones! Track three “Prelude to Massacre” has an entirely different feel though as it breaks into an ambient witchiness followed by more heavy Sludge Metal instrumentation in the song “Steel on Ice” I also enjoyed the fact that I could understand most of the lyrics in this song, seems pretty standard fantasy vibes here…but nothing original.

Before moving on to Track number five on the album I want to discuss their album art. It's cool and very original but I am not sure what it is depicting. Some kind of Cosmic Horror from a terrible H.P. LoveCraft Novel I assume, regardless it is definitely dream haunting material. “Taunters Theme” by Green King was a nice break in the action of the previous track. The Melodic guitar sounded very “Bard-core-esque”(Medieval bard music for those not familiar with the genre Bardcore) the name also gives it that quaint medieval feel which is long sought after but rarely achieved in modern metal.

The transition from the song “Tervakiituri” to “Where Speedian Dwells” seemed off I would have started Speedian with more whining guitar, but all in all a solid stoner metal track with lyrics like “fuck off and die” what can I really say other than “I need more music like this in my life!” The Final track on the album “Lifetakers”  begins with some brutal guitar chugging. The Insane guitar solo at 2:56 had my Brain melting and I felt helpless to some kind of horrific unknown Cosmic Horror which the band Green King had somehow conjured.
