Hedonihil – I Award winner

Hedonihil
I
by Brian "Metal" Morton at 27 April 2019, 9:22 PM

HEDONIHIL is a side project of three members of SWALLOW THE SUN. This solo album “I” is a drastic turn from what they usually play and is absolutely heavy as fuck. When I first listened to the album my jaw hit the floor and my eyes lit up. I was not expecting something as aggressive as this, but I am very very happy with it. From the moment the album starts, it’s like a barrage of Blackened Death Metal. From the song titles you can tell that the album is centered around anger and negativity. All three members have outdone themselves on “I”.

You have Juuso Raatikainen on drums, Juho Räihä on Guitars and Mikko Kotamäki on vocals. Forewarning you will probably end up listening to the album non stop as soon as you get it. The first song “Otherworldly Embrace” begins with the sound of rain and tolling bells, and slowly creeps into unrelenting Metal. This was a great way to begin the album. I will tell you now, I doubt you will be able to pick a favorite. The next song “Run You Scum” has a darker sound to it, but it is just as extreme as all the other songs. It’s still hard for me to believe it’s the same people from SWALLOW THE SUN.

“The Hedonist Anthem” is the third track on the album and is one of the best in my opinion. The song just hits that right spot when you want to listen to something extreme. It is just a very well written song and I absolutely loved it. “Temple of Venus” has an eerie piano intro that sets up the atmosphere and then out of nowhere it hits. “Anti – Human Agenda sounds like old school Black Metal if it was made today. This song is another one of my favorites if I had to pick. Even though this album is supposed to be about negativity, but this one made me smile.

The last song I want to talk about is “Better Tomorrow”. This song is absolutely amazing. It is one of the best produced Blackened Death Metal songs I have ever heard. If you don’t go buy this album immediately, I promise, you will regret it. This is by far one of the best things I have heard all year.
