Hellish - Theurgist's Spell

Theurgist's Spell
by Tony Playter at 08 February 2016, 10:20 PM

Representing their first outing on Blood Harvest Records, as well as their first non-demo/live music to be committed to the public sphere. HELLISH create an old-skool Black Metal vibe with some obvious nods to thrash, their first song, “Total Darkness”, providing a dynamic punch with a lurking intro before upping the speed and adding some TESTAMENT sounding solos. From the off, this four-piece can make a lot of noise, shrieking into “Silent Night” (appropriate for your anti-Christ Christmas nativity plays) and show casing some more exhibitionist shred. While Cristian León seems to only possess a limited drumming vocabulary, what he does do, he does exceptionally well, an extreme version of Marky Ramone, which fits well with Necromancer’s heavy yet simple bass lines. It interlocks well and allows the riffs to really hit home; the “Arrival Of Satan” has a much sparser vocal arrangement that let the duo’s guitars take center stage. The closing tune for the EP, “Assassin Mind”, is the best track on display, spitting lyrics with more understated solos, gives a lot more variance through the song. If they were going to expand to a LP format, then you’d expect abit more experimentation, but with only 4 songs that sound like it was recorded with a potato (sounds awesome and I can see what they were going for), this is a fantastic little EP. Buy either on cassette or on 7” for full 80’s Black Metal nostalgia.
