Helltrain - Route 666 (CD)

Helltrain
Route 666
by Grigoris Chronis at 18 November 2004, 8:37 PM

Late afternoon: I'd swear that this band is from Greece. One time it's the accent, next time it's the riff works, last is the production. But it's not. Second choice? Sweden, or Scandinavia in general. Forget the whole thing 'bout melody and ABBA/Malmsteen/Therion stuff. What the hell? Don't wanna start diggin' the Net from now! Holy shit, what a riff here… Wow… why did the word punk just cross my mind?… I don't wanna be sedated… Hmmm… I would say they're definitely not Chinese… What about Thai?… Nope…
Sweden's Helltrain is one of Nuclear Blast's latest (???) record deals. Unarguably a Rot 'n' Roll act, the band's sound resembles a little bit to the Misfits typical aura, plus a lot of latest Entombed or - should I say - Nightfall's Lesbian Show era (no booklet, though… Boooooo…). Oops: Lots of Kreator's Endorama period travels in… The music is definitely straight ahead riff-full, with typical brutal-isque vocals and mid to up tempo guitar work. The rhythm section stands still and solid, while the overall production surely fits in the band's plans for focusing on both the multi-listeners of Dark, Gothic, Death, Black or Punk (always) Rock or the undecisioneer teens who can't listen to real Metal (anyway, what's wrong with the kids today…).
The Route 666 CD is not something bad or boring, yet it can't bite the experienced listener (or, so I think). I should unquestionably dance to it in a Swedish pub after well-respected booze, still it's Wednesday and I'm feeling a little bit calm… One more time: Not bad for you, Mr. Ass Rot 'n' Roller!!!
