Hitman - The Preacher

The Preacher
by Chelsea Jennings at 09 December 2014, 9:49 PM

HITMAN is a heavy metal band hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Founded in September 2011 HITMAN is a self-described “whisky stoner metal” band they have just released their second EP titled “The Preacher”.

The first single off the newest EP “The Addiction” is characterized by driving drum riffs and huge guitar solos. This track discusses the band’s clear, obvious addictions to things including rock-n-roll, booze, and drugs. HITMAN admits to being “unable to sever the bonds” to their addictions to these things in their first single. The second single “Hell Is Just A Hole” starts out slowly before going into a more driving beat as the drums and bass kick in. This song describes HITMAN as living without a soul, and how it’s not a huge deal to them because they have been told, “hell is just a hole”. The preacher in the song has no sympathy for the person who won’t try to save themselves, but the band continues to believe in their “hell is just a hole” statement, therefore they see nothing to be afraid of, including going to hell if that’s what their lifestyle means. The third and final single “Under the Weight” is the heaviest song on the EP talking about bearing the weight of the world on one’s own shoulders, suggesting that is what turns the band to things like rock-n-roll, booze, and drugs.

Overall, this sounds like another average “stoner-rock” band as they describe themselves. Discussion of rock and booze abound. The topic seems a little redundant. Other than “The Preacher” being mentioned once or twice in the single “Hell Is Just A Hole” it’s not really clear why the band even titled the EP this in the first place. To add to the confusion the front cover has a picture of a cross on it, when the band is clearly convinced they are going to hell for the lifestyle they have lived. The entire thing comes off as a bit obscure to say the least.
