Jack Starr’s Burning Star - Land Of The Dead

Jack Starr’s Burning Star
Land Of The Dead
by Mark Gromen at 19 December 2011, 9:17 PM

With guest appearance by former MANOWAR guitarists Ross The Boss (“Warning Fire”) and Dave Shankle (“Never Again”), not to mention the melodies, “Land Of The Dead” (more than any previous Starr post-VIRGIN STEELE effort) seems an audition reel for the contemporary upstate New York brigade.

After the corny spoken word intro, Starr’s guitar is a shotgun blast out of the gates. Heretofore unknown Todd Michael Hall’s voice is of the high pitched European Metal variety, which suits these songs well. Structurally, the songs are cobbled together between Starr’s solo talent, so much so that vast sections are devoid of vocals and there’s far too many stretches where Hall is merely practicing voice lessons, with endless ‘whoa’, ‘ah’ or other unintelligible syllables, even if “Twilight Of The Gods” was intended to be a true instrumental.

Then again, it’s a Jack Starr album, so people aren’t buying it for erudite commentary. “Sands Of Time” is built around a bouncing gallop of a riff and “Stranger In Paradise” red-lines start-to-finish. The nearly acoustic crescendo building start to otherwise mid-tempo “Daughter Of Darkness” is a nice (old school) touch. Regardless of pace, this one features some of the tastiest soloing. “On The Wings Of The Night” also motors. Surprisingly, “Until The End” sounds like an old STEELE track, but from the days AFTER Starr had departed!
