Pagan Altar - Judgement Of The Dead

Pagan Altar
Judgement Of The Dead
by Daniel Silva at 29 October 2012, 8:45 PM

Originally part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, PAGAN ALTAR has been active since 1978 but their debut album was only released in 1998 (although it was actually recorded in 1982). They were known for spending considerable time and effort into portraying the atmosphere of their songs into their shows through a perfected stage art (something that I would love to see since not many bands that I know of treat their live shows as a theatrical show as well, with the exception of GHOST). PAGAN ALTAR hails from England and play Doom Metal, they are composed of William Gallagher (Bass), Dean Alexander (Drums), Vince Hempstead (Guitars), Alan Jones (Guitars) and Terry Jones (Vocals).

“Judgment Of The Dead” is a compilation album and apparently a remaster as well. I really liked the songs on this album with them being on the classical Doom Metal style, great atmospheric songs that speak of profane sacrificial altars and all that fun stuff… but unfortunately not everything is perfect on this album, the biggest flaw for me is the production, which made the lead vocals get buried deep into the mix, which made it sound almost inaudible and, I don’t know if it is a production error or Terry’s vocals are really that way, but they sound really whiny like he is on helium or something.

Even with the bad production, it is not enough to complete ruin the album as it shows the strength of early Doom Metal from a band that is part of history and didn’t receive much recognition on those days.
