Kadavar - Rough Times

Rough Times
by Riccardo Gaffuri at 25 November 2017, 1:45 PM

Welcomed return for German KADAVAR: after their 2013 “Abra Kadavar” and 2015 “Berlin” they’re now releasing their new “Rough Times,” out for Nuclear Blast Records. This trio made by vocalist/guitarist Lupus, drummer Tiger and bassist Dragon keeps swimming in 70’s thick atmospheres, once again in a convincing way, while being able to add some variations to their sound, starting from the roots.

Title track thick and greasy sound, typical of this genre, opens this release, with a catchy and haunting main riff; “Into the Wormhole” walks along more acid paths, with a lighter and more open refrain. Heavier riffs mark “Skeleton Blues,” giving it a more modern angle, balanced by psychedelic melodies in the refrain. Release speeds up with “Die Baby Die” and goes into the best part of the album, where this German trio give their best with “Vampires,” pipe organ-introduced “Tribulation Nation” and space trip “Words of Evil.”

In the last three track the band changes its clothes into tracks far different from the first part of the album: “The Lost Child” balances speed up sections to more relaxed parts, while “You Found the Best in me” it’s a freak love declaration that anticipates “A l’ombre du temps,” with a spoken French outro to say goodbye to listeners. Good songwriting, juxtaposition between energetic sections and lighter and eerie ones fuse into an admirable blend, solid and honest, as a new proof of what KADAVAR are worth.
