Kalmo – Gehinnom

by Justin "Witty City" Wittenmeier at 12 June 2021, 7:52 AM

KALMO is a one man Finnish doom who has released his debut full length “Gehinnom”; an EP was released in 2019.   "Gehinnom" is a six track ep that clocks in around 27 minutes long. It starts out on a decent if unremarkable note but fails to maintain any momentum all the way through.

Overall, their sound is doom/sludge but it has a tribal vibe running thru it. The vocalist uses a rough voice that is somewhere close to growl mixed with spoken word. The drums are heavy on the low end; these two elements combine to give the band a tribal and ritualistic atmosphere. It is an interesting aspect and the vibe works well enough. Unfortunately, the songs aren't all that great and only get worse by the end.

My biggest problem is with the vocals—they work during the album’s heavier moments.  However, when the guitars are clean or the music is going thru a lull, the vocals sound corny and it really pulls me out of the songs. The first track, "Tuho" hits hard with the dropping of a massive guitar chord and the drums are of the earthquake variety. In this moment, I am enjoying the song. But it has this strange quality of having the feeling of building up to a climax that never really arrives.

The huge and thick bass tones of "Tuli" pulled me in but the vocals are there fighting against me every step of the way. I like how this song is a huge movement of sludgy noise but that also keeps it from really going anywhere interesting. "TSEPVSL" has a solid flow to it but by the time it finishes, I found myself growing a little weary of this album which isn’t a good sign considering it isn’t that long. There isn’t anything wrong with the song per say but it just doesn’t feel very exciting.

"Mitään ei jää"is where I start to get lost because from here on put the songs are just plodding and do not go anywhere. "Marjaana" is what I was talking about earlier—-the vocals get monotone and monotonous quick especially in the beginning when the song consists of lighter music and sparser notes. "Kuolleen linnun laulu" is too short to prove itself but considering it isn’t that good, maybe that is a good thing. Kalmo's “Gehinnom” has some good aspects to it but this EP goes down hill much too quick to be enjoyable.
