Kargyr – Kargyr

by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 16 November 2022, 8:18 AM

From Bandcamp, “French Metal Project KARGYR proudly uses various influences taken from many Metal genres on his new self-titled EP and adds exotic eastern harmonies to the already brimming melting pot. His goal and passion are to infer as much contrast as possible in his music.” The album has four songs.

“Chronophobic” is the first. It’s eight-and-a-half-minutes in length. It opens with solemn and somewhat mysterious acoustical guitars. A passage of thick harsh vocals enters for a minute, then is replaced by clean tones and meaty bass notes. Stylistically, this is hard to pin down. It’s sort of all over the place without a central core. “The Abyss” is a slower, heavily accented song with cymbal crashes and pig squeals. But, the clean vocals seem a bit out of place. Harsh vocals seem more suited to the music, but the music is fairly one-dimensional and not every exciting.

“Sword” is the next offering. Again, the style is hard to pin down. At times it seems like Extreme Metal, while other times it had Doom qualities. The clean vocals are also a bit pitchy, and the music is quite unimaginative. “Aura” closes the album. It’s a longer offering, and another song that suffers from some identity issues. The clean vocal border on awful in this song. Overall, I get that this is a fairly low budget release, but the music is pretty bad. In my experience, the French Extreme Metal scene is one of the better ones out there, with a lot of creativity and unique artists. This one however, you can safely skip.
