Ketzer - Satan’s Boundaries Unchained (Reissue)

Ketzer
Satan’s Boundaries Unchained (Reissue)
by "Metal Mark" Garcia at 14 November 2019, 7:42 AM

Back in 2016, when dealing with “Starless”, this writer praised the way the German quintet KETZER worked back on such wonderful album. I have to confess that I didn’t heard “Cloud Collider” yet (although I read the review my friend Martin wrote about it), and now, it’s time to deal with the reissue of the band’s first album, “Satan’s Boundaries Unchained”. Well, the Black/Thrash Metal essence of the work is presented on the album, as a fusion of German Thrash Metal bands as DESTRUCTION and SODOM with Black Metal essence. But the band sounds rawer and straight than on their future works. But it sounds great and shows that KETZER is a band that, primordially, is honest to itself and to its music. A massive energy comes from the songs, with very good tempo changes and all the elements that they would show in the future in a mature way.

The production, mixing and mastering were done by Mersus (Chris Menning, the former drummer of DESTRÖYER 666, and a known producer) who knew how to balance energy aggressiveness and distortion with a sense of sound clarity, bringing to the album a sharp and clean approach. Musically, it’s impossible to not surrender to the crude energy of songs as “Satan’s Boundaries Unchained” (furious guitars and vocals with a good work on the rhythmic session), the brutality and speed of “The Fire to Conquer the World”, the charming weight and riffs of “Warlust”, the bitter and raw approach of the rhythm used on “To Each Saint His Candle” (excellent and solid work on bass guitar and drums) and on “Inverted Cross”, and the impacting energy of “My Triumph” are the best songs, and as bonus songs for this version, the live shots for “Inverted Cross” and “The Fire to Conquer the World”. Yes, even in the beginning, the band was pretty good.

Some reissues aren’t a good experience, but “Satan’s Boundaries Unchained” deserved such honor. And here it is, so don’t lose the opportunity and hear how KETZER can make the walls of your houses tremble.
