Madwork - Overflow (CD)

Madwork
Overflow
by Michael Dalakos at 06 August 2005, 9:40 PM

Oh, this is cool. I kind of really like those releases that are not easily classified under a genre or two (or three, hahaha). Even though Overflow came in an empty sleeve with almost no info at all (and you know how much this pisses me off), God bless the internet, I managed to gather lots of info about this Italian act.
It appears that Madwork has been around since 1997 but their first demo was released in 2001 and was called Atlantis. Since then three more demos followed. Through their short history a lot of lineup changes have occurred. The band did a small tour recently for the promotion of this album.
So what exactly do Madwork play? Well, for starters I'd like to add that I haven't heard any of their other works so to be able to comment on progress etc. The music of Overflow is a mixture of modern Metal, atmospheric landscapes and a base of… Queensryche (?) influences (Empire era). Yeah, I think so. You see, it's quite hard to make up your mind while listening to this little gem. While the opening track is a bit straightforward, a melodic dynamite, the rest of the songs are so nicely blended with set back keyboard use and other goodies that enrich each composition in a different way.
Overflow is one of those full length releases that run like water. It has such a smooth sound and is so interesting (from a compositional perspective) it makes you eager to listen what's up next! It comes with a very good production, a really warm sound. Personally I am amazed by the vocal abilities of Jago. The guy can sing, for real!
So if you are looking for an album to sharpen the edges of your mind, take the time and check this one out.
