Malefice - Gravitas

Malefice
Gravitas
by Lauryn Plummer at 23 November 2014, 12:48 AM

Since coming onto the UK metal scene in 2007, MALEFICE have already put out a full-length debut album, they have played with the likes of ANTHRAX and ARCH ENEMY and have played twice at Download Festival. After a break from the band, MALEFICE are back with 4 new tracks to melt your ears with. I must say, that just from these four tracks, the band are at it again with their heavy riffs and literal lightning speed drum beats; it’s something that cannot go unheard.

Although short, you can easily see that these guys have talent. At the beginning of the quartet of tracks there is “Forsaken”, yeah, there is a soft start, but it’s like a build up into what the song actually is, from the quiet start it’s like it switches to a totally new song; it’s just death metal from here on out till the end of the song, and it’s really impressive. Second is “Heroes”, and it’s straight in with drummer James its simple really, these guys want to play metal music and that’s exactly what you get. But in this track, they mix it up a bit and have clean vocals in the song as well as uncleans, and it breaks up the song, as well as it proving that as a band they don’t want to do the same thing every time.

Thirdly, there is “Escape”, again there is a quiet build up before a wave of instruments literally hit you in the face, and you’re just like “woah where did this come from” and yet again, there’s a healthy balance with clean and unclean vocals which gives the song diversity, something that a band returning from a break really needs. Finally, there is “My Design”, which is the longest track out of the four. You get a mini drum intro from James and again you’re hit with something, no other than Dales strong vocals, seriously they are really powerful, it just shocks you, but it’s a good kind of shock, and makes you want to hear more from them. With the mix of riffs, fast drumbeats and powerful vocals, MALEFICE are really back with a bang.
