Manegarm - Vargstenen (CD)

by Panagiotis Koutsompogeras at 04 July 2007, 9:11 PM

MANEGARM is a Swedish Viking / black metal band from Norrtalje, which was initially formed under the name ANTIKRIST. Interestingly enough the band's name comes from MANAGARMR, a wolf in Norse mythology. I think we are talking about a strange and unique at the same time type of band. They mostly deal with Viking mythology and other interesting stuff like that plus some black metal elements.

I think that the majority (or possibly all) of the lyrics are written in Swedish or some ancient kind of language, which gives them more identity and personal approach to their music. There are many melodies - almost weeping ones from time to time - plus many folk elements throughout this album. Sometimes they give you the impression that they are a mix of NO MAN'S LAND, SKYCLAD, AMON AMARTH and bands like that. However they are far more less aggressive than the AMONs and more melodic and folk than SKYCLAD.
Their Pagan Viking themes and musicality often include some black metal passages. The fact that the songs are written in the Swedish language might make you feel a bit bored after a while but the whole Swedish Viking metal thing might balance the scene.

Janne Liljekvist's violin gives a total personal identity to the band - not in the SKYCLAD way - but in a more melodic and traditional approach. You should really check them out for they have something unique to offer but do give yourself enough time for the total comprehension of their work. Highlights of this album can be considered - amongst the other - the following ones: Ur Själslig Död, En Fallen Fader and Genom Världar Nio.
