Martin Rubashov - Hårga

Folk Music is one of the roots of Rock ‘n’ Roll, and Metal inherited some of this genre as well, even when the listeners are able to hear them clearly. Those words mean that Folk Rock and Folk Metal, in reality, are new expressions for a deeper root of a whole musical genre. But it’s not so easy for a die-hard Metalhead deal with Martin Rubashov’s “Hårga” at a first time. It’s not a Folk Metal or even a Folk Rock song (yes, it’s a Single), but a Folk Music, a version for an old Folk song called “Hårgadansen”, and its lyrics deal with an old Swedish legend. Here, a complete tender ambiance with charming melodies in an acoustic approach, with the focus of it being voices and acoustic guitars. All can be absorbed without problems.

A song like that deserves a clean sonority with defined instrumental tunes to reach its full potential. And it’s what “Hårga” presents, but keeping an organic feeling, without fill the songs with endless sound effects that could damage its purpose of existence. Yes, all is working fine on the production. Musically, “Hårga” is what can be called as a typical European Folk song, because such tender ambiance and melodies can’t be heard, all using melodic voices and excellent acoustic guitars arrangements (that aren’t so heard to be understood), but some piano’s parts can be heard as well. It’s kind of hypnotic, and can seduce easily the ones who hear it more than one time.

“Hårga” shows how this poet called Martin Rubashov has to offer, so hear it more than two times and let you enter a new musical world. But maybe an EP, or even an album, would be better the next time.
