Maskin - Storm

by Calen Nesten at 02 January 2015, 9:48 PM

MASKIN is an up and coming band from Ōrebro Sweden. Their debut album Storm was released in September, 2014 and marks two years of hard work for the band. The band bills themselves as “Stoner boogie galactic fuzz rock”.

While that description is accurate, to me they sound like a forgotten band from the heyday of 90's grunge. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I happen to enjoy some grunge from time to time but I could not get into this album at all. The vocals feel like a generic impression of Stone Temple Pilots and Bush and at times, severely overpowers the other instruments which are actually pretty solid.

The instrumentation is great, but the band's guitars and bass have some wicked awesome effects pedals and  I feel like they could be experimented with a bit more. The attention seems to focus on the vocalist a bit too much while the potential for bizarre and unique instrumentals and solos are limitless. With that said, I did like the tracks “Swarm” and “Another Hive”, they are worth checking out. MASKIN has worked damn hard for two years to make their first album, they obviously have the drive and dedication to create some pretty heavy music but this album just didn't sit well with me.

I would still recommend giving them a chance and go see them out if you are even in the Ōrebro area, it looks like they put on a great show.
