Maverick - Cold Star Dancer Award winner

Cold Star Dancer
by Kyle Scott at 17 April 2018, 4:00 PM

Cheered on by their local scene in Belfast, Ireland comes MAVERICK. A new twist on 80s and 90s Rock that features intense chords and no-hold-barred vocals. Originally dubbing themselves “SNAKE SKIN SINNER” (wtf, guys…) they started out playing their favorites from their idols such as KISS, SKID ROW, DEF LEPPARD, and WASP. They changed their name and started making a name for themselves in Belfast. Before they knew it, they were going on tour with FASTER PUSSYCAT and TIGERTAILZ. “Cold Star Dancer” is MAVERICK’s sophomore album.

Intro track “Dusk” plays off slow and desolate then slowly builds up like the opening soundtrack of some hero’s epic journey to defeat evil. This track segues into the title track “Cold Star Dancer” seamlessly, grabbing your attention by the scruff and carrying you into some strange, mesmerizing world full of energetic drums and explosive vocals. The energy is absolutely uplifting! David Balfour’s vocals captivate and leave you hanging on every chorus (amazing how he was originally the band’s drummer before he took up the mic himself). Breakneck speed is the name of the track “Myrmidon”, a thrilling tale of the “ant people” of Greek Mythology headed by Achilles during the Trojan War according to the Iliad. A love song fit for the 80s, “Kiss of Fire” is full of passion and Ryan Balfour’s amazing string-tangling riffs. MAVERICK is all about delivering energy and soul into their songs. Ever since their first album “Quid Pro Quo”, they have been giving 110% to all their songs.

They really channel that devotion in “Ex Machina”, and if you remain uninspired to Do the Thing, then I am forced to assume you are dead of both mind and heart. Their cover of “Jessie’s Girl” is very loyal to Rick Springfield’s original, David adds a level of emotional depth to the lyrics. Without relying much on synth noises or over the top vocals, MAVERICK doesn’t need anyone to show them how to sing from their hearts. Their refined sound is sure to take them to higher places in the future.
