Megatherium – God

by William Travers at 09 May 2020, 12:27 AM

Doom and Stoner Metal can be slightly niche subgenres that ate almost overlooked at times by the connoisseurs of Metal. Death, Black and Thrash are normally the mainstays of any stereotypical metal heads arsenal. Hailing from Verona in Italy we have MEGATHERIUM. A four-piece Doom/Stoner band that have been on the scene since 2011. With one full album already under their belts as well as an EP we have the group’s second release “GOD”.

The artwork instantly and clearly plays on this theme with a mystical looking creature sitting in within some heavy symbology. Creating an instant image of a deity overlooking its believers. The album opens with “Generate” and the song lives up to its name. Generating an atmosphere and ambiance that leads one to will some life into the music so that we can enjoy the groovy rhythms and riffage of the music. However, it certainly feels as though this is the ground being set for a ritual.

The ominous tone is continued into “The One”. Those groovy structures to the songs that we so wanted to materialize during the introduction have miraculously appeared and one cannot help but move to the music. All parts of the band come together to create a seamless flowing track that is impressive from start to finish. Next, I would bring your attention to “The Truth”. With a much slower and more deliberate introduction we are again shown the musical knowledge of the band as it creates an epic atmosphere that would not have been missing among many of the Psych bands of the 70’s/80’s.

With “The Eye” there is a very trance like feel to the music. Following a very deliberate beat that drives everything forwards and the depth to the sound of the music is incredible. The structure follows an interesting pattern that allows for the heavier elements to be accented by the softer sections and the effect of this does not go unnoticed. Finally, “The Strength”. With a no-frills introduction that throws the listener straight into the now established structure to the songs. It is again a well-presented Stoner and Psych track that allows the listener to lose themselves and immerse their senses in the sounds they produce.

Overall, I would say that this is a very strong album, MEGATHERIUM have clearly taken time to hone their skills, develop their musical outputs and as a result have produced an album to be very proud of. Well done guys!
