Nocturnal Bloodshed

Rain. A baby crying. And then some strings. That is the ominous way that MISTWEAVER’s newest album “Nocturnal Bloodshed” begins, before introducing some marching drums and simple guitar sounds to gradually ramp up the tension. The first track “The Birth” continues in this way before “The Biggest Threat” suddenly explodes with some death vocals, and a subtle dose of synth amongst the traditional strumming and drumming.

The result of this is a decent piece of music, nicely balanced between techno, modern sounding synth and the heavier, darker sound of the other instruments. Eduardo Navazo consequently transforms the course of the album with his keyboard alone, putting the “melodic” into the Melodic Death Metal category where the band place themselves.

The point of contention then is where it often is in Death Metal; with the vocals. Raúl Puente has a decent growl in his throat, and can certainly pull off the sound. The fact that it is slightly at odds with the keyboards can be seen as either a good or bad thing depending on taste, but they are balanced fairly well so that one doesn’t overpower the other.

Pandemonium” has a great hook in its intro that sweeps you up and puts you straight into the music. During the song, the death vocals are juxtaposed with some female backing vocals that almost fill the same role as the synth; adding some melody and gothic sounds into the mix.

The presence of two guitars in the band is definitely audible, with the variation of sounds throughout the album proving this. Many times, one will play a solo while the other underpins it, or go on a tangent from the rest of the band and add some spice. The band have ultimately avoided the mistake of sounding too samey in their songs, and each one leads on well from the last.

The dark atmosphere of the album is not only present in the album art and intro track either, as the final song “Deceivers’ Fall” is a wonderfully heavy example. During its course, we hear what sounds like Latin being spoken (which immediately puts me in mind of Dracula, for some reason) and since the sound takes a different tone the music itself becomes weightier and more forceful, somehow. The record has clearly been recorded and mixed by fans of well-cooked Death Metal, and anyone of a similar mind set is likely to enjoy it.
