Moonspell - Under Satanae (CD)

Moonspell
Under Satanae
by Harry Papadopoulos at 25 October 2007, 3:47 PM

This release consists of re-recordings of the band's legendary mini-CD Under The Moonspell (1994), but is also going back as far as their first demo Anno Satanae, (1993) and their first song as MORBID GOD, Serpent Angel (recorded in 1992, a song that this year becomes 15 years old).
It was 1989, when the band was formed under the name MORBID GOD, in Brandoa, Portugal. In 1992 they changed their name to MOONSPELL. It's the same year that the promo track Serpent Angel was released. In 1993, MOONSPELL recorded their only demo Anno Satanae. A demo which got very good reviews and caught the attention of French record label Adipocere. For that label they recorded their mini-CD Under The Moonspell. The release was considered a landmark in the history of the underground Portuguese metal scene, selling more than 5000 copies! During the same year, MOONSPELL was the support band in CRADLE OF FILTH's concert in Lisbon. From then on MOONSPELL found their way and signed to Century Media in 1995 while, in the same year, they released one of their best albums (if not the best): Wolfheart. The rest is known history…
It's one of those albums that is good for the old ones to remember (and stop searching for those rare recordings) and the young ones to listen, how one of the biggest bands of the scene begun. Here we have ten songs, written between 1992 and 1994. MOONSPELL here played Black Metal inspired by the scene of that time, when Black Metal began to dive in more atmospheric paths, with a touch of CELTIC FROST as well as BATHORY and DEAD CAN DANCE. Of course, the Arabic and Mediterranean music scales are here, a trademark for their next releases, showing us that even from their first days, MOONSPELL tried to bring something different in the Black Metal scene. And they succeeded in it.
This album is a rough diamond. Ten compositions that many bands will envy even nowadays. Songs like Goat On Fire or Opus Diabolicum are not something everyone can write. Better production, better sound, great songs. A 'must have' for the fans of MOONSPELL. And not only. MOONSPELL described their music in those years as the overwhelming Meditteranic Music, the immense Atlantic Power, the Sadness and Solitude spoken by the Sea Winds and the sapient words from of all Thought and Will. Can't agree more!
