Morbid Angel - Illud Divinum Insanus

Morbid Angel
Illud Divinum Insanus
by Nikos Makropoulos at 10 June 2011, 12:26 PM

The return of the death-metal overlords is at hand!!The album that all death-metal fans were waiting for is finally released, celebrating death, sickness and Evil incarnated. The Ancient ones returned to drag us all down to the abyss, giving us the pleasure, the blessing, re-opening the Gateways to annihilation once more! Illud Divinum Insanus is the best continuum, after their last release with David Vincent 15 years ago and is here full of sickness and vengeance

Believe me, I really wish these words were valid and representative of the new album of the Florida ex-death metal masters Morbid Angel. I’ve tried several times, I have been listening and listening to this album over and over again, trying to convince myself to keep an open mind as far as I could. After 10 spins of Illum Divinum Insanus the questions raised were; was I hallucinating? Or the tunes I was listening to were meaningless beyond any imagination?

All Morbid Angel fans and death metal fans in general, knew that through times and release after release, Morbids were innovative, fully inspirational, daring to play the strangest ideas, contributing  to the genre and their own trademark sound style. Even when they released, ”Morbid  Angel: The Laibach remixes’’, which was a release were the Slovenian industrial pioneers Laibach attempt to give their perspective to some Morbid Angel songs from the ‘’Covenant’’ album, giving  a result so nightmarish and dark that even the hardcore fans were satisfied. We all knew that David Vincent was and is still digging tunes from bands like Bauhaus, Christian Death and Laibach. It was a really cool and wise move back then.

Today…the return of "Evil D" or "Mr Vincent’" as the main vocalist, is bringing us to a desperate and very uncomfortable position, making us wondering…WHY?? With the blessings of the main creator and composer Tray Azagthoth, Morbid Angel are presenting us the most uninspired and shallow release ever!!!! Eleven tracks on their 8th full release, and as hard as I tried I could not find  a single one track that had something that would make me feel like I used to when I was listening to their previous releases. The true-raging riffs, the twisted and full of thickness compositions, the deep and growling vocals are already history my friends. If you have been waiting to find a single thing of those I mentioned, you must be listening to the wrong record or you have serious ear problems.

From the shitty and totally boring intro called "Omni Potens" (almighty!!!), to the first track having the most childish title I’ve ever heard, "Too extreme!!", I knew what to expect and I was right, a constant and monotonous electro-beat, some guitar samples and Evil D just throwing some words, believing that he is still on Genitorturers"Existo Vulgore" is a moment of the band’s trademark elements, but too poor and fully uninspired; it’s like a filler rather than a full song, the same goes to "Blades of Baal", more boring than the previous one, reminding a little of the ‘’Domination’’ era, but way too uninspired.

From the next track ‘’I Am Morbid’’ until the ultimate bozo composition "Desrtuctos vs The Earth/Attack", I couldn’t help myself from laughing. All tracks were meaningless, immature, they remind me Ramstein trying to copy White Zombie at their worst. "Nevermore" is unable to keep this thing alive, trapped in its mediocrity, along with the final tracks "Beauty Meets Beast", "Radikult" and "Profundis-Mea Cupla"

It seems that Tim Yeung, who replaced Pete Sandoval behind the drum kit, wasn't given a chance to expose his talents and skills, because of the lack of inspiration by the other members of the band, or even maybe because they are tired???Who knows…? One thing is for sure my friends…the times of the brutality and sickness are gone forever for Morbid Angel, along with honesty and talent. Maybe it’s time for them to retire while they still can…

Tray betrayed all of his loyal fans as a mastermind, and Mr. Vincent should return to his former band Genitorturers along with his lovely wife. Make your selves a favor, save your money for a better release, more loyal and let the former masters lie where they deserve to after this miasma…in a Lions Den.
