Morker - Hostmakter (CD)

by Eirini Papadopoulou at 22 August 2008, 12:31 PM

Mörker  is the swedish word for darkness, and these swedish blacksters give us a good sense of it through their second album Hostmakter  (Powers of Autumn).
MORKER  was founded in Winter of 2004 by Ascaroth , Larssa  and Grimmer, with a stable line up through the years to come. Their first demo, Den Sista Utfarden  (The last excursion), came out on April of 2005, first as self-financed and then released as a mini CD by Northern Silence Productions. After that, the band started to write music in order to release their debut album, Skuggornas Rike (The Realm of Shadows), in July 2006 again by Northern Silence Productions.
In 2007, Morker  finished the recordings of  Höstmakter  (Powers of Autumn) and mastered the album with Tore Stjerna (a.k.a Necromorbus). The band used a session drummer as they are not interested in live performances and - as they say - the band stands better as a 3-piece so they are going to use a session drummer in the future. The lyrics are all in Swedish and their influences are mostly drawn from Swedish nature and more specifically from autumn and winter seasons with all elements combined to invoke the sadness and darkness of the beautiful northern landscapes.
Höstmakter starts with I Flodens Forsande Brus  , introducing epic melodies in guitars and vocals straight from Hades dragging us down to an heroic journey of beauty and sorrow. The interspersing of different meters, tempos and guitar riffs reminds of the early Dimmu Borgir era, but without imitating or just throwing in the same patterns, since MORKER has found the recipe for success by using their melodic and rhythmic ideas blended together to create a collage of the beautiful pagan scenery. Even though the guitars are predominant, the artful use of keyboards cannot go unnoticed as piano juxtaposes with the use of harsh guitar riffs being conducive to the band's symphonic sound.
MORKER's music is captivating and alternates through fast guitar picking and blast to melodic beauty of folk and acoustic passages as in Dodsangest. The song Djupa Spar Av Tvivel has a characteristic folk tune which takes the imagination to ancient woods where pagan rituals are being performed. Sun and darkness play a game throughout the album as the black guitar riffs and vocals give their place to original acoustic moments that warm one's heart.
Höstmakter is a very well thought and produced album on every aspect of it .The manipulation of music is being raw yet delicate and I believe it is a must have album for fans of northern melodic Black Metal.
