Mortician - No War (& More) (CD)

No War (& More)
by Caterina Zoi at 05 December 2009, 10:13 PM

There are bands in Heavy Metal that have reached the sky and we worship them as gods. But there are also some other bands that are not lucky enough to achieve this, although they should. They try again and again but it's all in vain.

MORTICIAN from Austria unfortunately is one of these bands. They started back in 1983 and they played their first live in 1984 in a place full of metalheads who enjoyed their show although their songs weren't known. In 1987 they recorded their first demo tape called Street Warrior. Some time after this they managed to record a three-track vinyl album under the nameNo War and it was then when they had great chances of becoming huge, but due to some unfortunate events they just couldn't cope with it. After some years they recorded another demo tape called Break The Rules and by 1990 Thomas (who was from the beginning the leader of the band) decided that this would be the end of MORTICIAN.

From the beginning to the end they always had problems with their members and it's a fact that each of their demos was recorded with another singer. Street Warrior with Robert Wilfinger, No War with Siegfried Burtscher and Break The Rules with Thomas Cassan. After all these years Thomas and Patrick who remained close to each other decided to make a new start with MORTICIAN. They releasedNo War & More, which contains all of their old songs and now they are looking forward to performing live.
No War & More starts with three kick-ass songs from No War and when I listened to them I understood why after this release they were given great chances. I can say that these three songs are my personal favorite from this album. Also, in my opinion  Siegfried Burtscher had the best voice of MORTICIAN's singers. It continues with the songs from their first demo Street Warrior and then with the songs from their last one Break The Rules. To tell the truth I enjoyed pretty much this album. They remind me of classic bands such as RAVEN and ANGEL WITCH and I just love this classic sound. Some may say that they recycle the same things. It's true. But personally I listened to this album with pleasure. The sound isn't that good and I guess that this is so due to the fact that the songs are taken from their old demos.

To sum up, if you like the classic sound give it a try…I'm sure that you'll like it. After all they had the potential of becoming a more popular band but they were just unlucky.
