Mortualia – Wild Wild Misery

Mortualia
Wild Wild Misery

When it comes to DSBM the first band that instantly comes to my mind is SHINING from Sweden. When giving “Wild Wild Misery” a listen, I may have had too high of an expectation. MORTUALIA’s music is kind of shoegaze like, which I personally don’t care for. I think that those of you familiar with my reviews know what I like in my Black Metal.

Now I will not bash a fellow musician. I won’t tell you that these chaps are untalented or anything of the such. You fans of Shoe Gaze and Black Gaze will probably enjoy it very much. Hell, even you DSBM fans might dig it. I myself found it repetitive, and kind of boring. I am sorry fellows, but remember that it’s not you. It’s just your style is not one that I am into.

That all being said, the music very well put together. The boys were on point with their instruments, and very tight as a band. Some of the drum work wasn’t bad at all. The guitar work was on the ambient side and a bit spacy. Of course, as with most Black Metal, the vocals were mainly growls, shrieks, and screams. I honestly think that you should have picked a different sound to roll with.

Of course, as with any other review I give a low score to, I want to reiterate that I don’t find a lack of artistry or talent here. I suggest that you guys maybe take a different approach to your next album. Add some stuff to make it a little more interesting. The problem is, and this is no fault of you guys, when you pick a solid genre and stick with I,t these days, you sound like all the others in the genre. I see potential, but this album just did not do it for me. I actually walked away from it half way through.
