Mosaic - Cloven Fires

Mosaic
Cloven Fires
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 05 September 2019, 5:57 AM

MOSAIC was founded back in 2005 by Inkantator Koura to express his thoughts, ideas and visions. The name MOSAIC is directly linked and derived of IK’s favorite record, “Mosaic” by WOVENHAND, it was chosen to become a vessel without musical limits - everything was possible. Though the foundation and primary background was at any time Black Metal. Mosaic is the “pre” and “post” phase of the alchemystick proclamation. Next to the secret arts, Mosaic is highly characterized by traditions, legends and mysticism. The idea is to present arcane knowledge in IK’s own way and interpretation – combining different languages or to vernacularise his ideas and visions. This new EP contains just two tracks.

“Cloven Fires” is the first track. The sound is loosely Black Metal, with blast beat drumming, a wall of guitars, and anguished screams. At one point, spoken words come into play. I cannot quite make out what he is saying but it sounds hopeless, cold, and with rage. A fire crackles at the end of the track. “Ambrosia” is a little shorter, and opens with clean guitars and a marching cadence from the drums. All throughout, there is an echo that permeates the track. It creates a harrowing atmosphere that somehow transcends the music itself.

Overall, it was tough to grade an album or give a recommendation based on just two short tracks. But I heard some potential here for sure. As the introduction suggested, it’s a very personal listening experience, created by someone who indeed does not have any musical limits. With a gun to my head, I would say it is Black Metal, but it goes pretty deeper past this. He incorporates various different elements into the album, which rounds it out and keeps it fuller. I would recommend this.
