Mother of Graves – In Somber Dreams

Mother of Graves
In Somber Dreams
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 05 February 2023, 6:48 AM

From Bandcamp, “MOTHER OF GRAVES s are Melodic Death/Doom necromancers from Indianapolis, IN. Fans of early KATATONIA, PARADISE LOST, MY DYING BRIDE, ANATHEMA, and TIAMAT will make lifelong blood-pacts with the band’s spellbinding debut EP, "In Somber Dreams." The EP has four songs, and the title track is the first. Harmonized guitars and a slow, solemn sound leads off the album, followed by deep guttural vocals. The cleans in the chorus are a nice supplemental sound. It picks up in pacing towards the end, with IRON MAIDEN influenced leads.

“Nameless Burial” is another depressive affair, with spoken words in the beginning that are hard to decipher. Dark gutturals follow. The piano notes are a nice addition. Piano can impart more of a feeling of desolation, or can be quite the opposite. In this case, it’s the former. “The Urn” mixes in some ambient elements and clean guitars to the wasteland of hope. The pacing varies between slow desolation and faster torture…but either way the torture is real. “Deliverance” closes the EP. Another slow grind allows the Doomy elements to sink in far. At the half-way mark, the sound clears a bit from the grey, and charming tones ensue. Bass guitar takes over from there, with a bit of anger, but depressive tones carry the song to completion.

Overall, this was a nice slab of desolate Doom/Death Metal, with some varied elements. Through four songs, the band was able to prove that they have a fairly deep well of songwriting creativity. I would love to hear more from the band for sure.
