Mr. Big - The Stories We Could Tell Award winner

Mr. Big
The Stories We Could Tell
by Cami Kyttle at 18 September 2014, 11:24 PM

After listening to the new album by MR. BIG entitled "The Stories We Could Tell," I had to do a little research on this unique band.  Here's a little background: they were formed in 1988 in Los Angeles, California….broke up in 2002…reunited in 2009… And released their first album in 10 years in January of 2011. That's a pretty crazy run for a band. Even now in 2014, MR. BIG is still cranking out hits. I learned from their website, that Ace Frehley's drummer Matt Starr will sit in for Pat Torpey during the band's upcoming world tour. Torpey was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Metal Temple Magazine wishes him the best.

This was my first time ever hearing this band and I was impressed. MR. BIG is more of a alternative rock band. The music wasn't heavy enough for me, but the sound and lyrics were good. The vocalist was extremely easy to understand, which is a big deal, when I listen to albums. I can see this music being played live to any crowd at pretty much any venue and patrons dancing, singing, and having a good time.

I thought the vocalist had a unique voice that synchronized perfectly with the background instruments. This album is very well produced, in that the band nor the vocalist are overpowering.

A few songs start out with a guitar solo with a kick of drums.  It was nice to hear another part of the band being showcased without vocals attached. "The Stories We Could Tell" was one of these songs. It featured a couple areas of electric guitar that really stand out to the listener.

"The Monster in Me" is another song that starts off with a badass electric guitar solo. This song has unique beat to coincide with the lyrics that I enjoyed. From what I gathered this song is about a girl that a guy can't get enough of.

MR. BIG is a band that knows what they're doing. Being around since 1988, has given them time to find their groove and stick with it. I think this album will succeed with old and new fans.  I also think that this new material will draw in large crowds at any venue they play.
