Mutagenocide - Devolve

by YngwieViking at 14 October 2014, 10:40 PM

A pure English Metal thrashing Fury played in an intrepid perspective, a ferocious slab of musical frenzy packed in a six track Ep, a compressed and concentrated dose of uncompromising Extreme Metal in a sonic deluge!

That’s what the five British boys brings to us with a undeniable savoir faire with “Devolve”, and they know exactly how to deliver their own breed of beefy rythhmics, fierce Blast beat, wicked technical patterns, colossal breakdowns, powerful gang vocals choir and a few tasty axe solos and everything in between, set to honour the modern Metal arsenal!

Of course their approach is a result of a blend of their influences, while “Entombed and Swallowed” is clearly under a PANTERA wake, a typical and special groovy colour, a density quite similar to “Mouth For War”, this number is even more interesting in its middle section where it displayed an unusual arrangement, another kind of method with an almost Proggy/Ambient part not far from late 80’s TESTAMENT, a good way to increase the drama of the whole song like an hellish Roller-coaster.

The staccato riffage wall and the complex dual guitar trick of “Hysteria” are efficient, the obscure hypnotic shape of the title track, the straightness of “Half-Born” and the ferocity of "Remeron Nightmares" these pieces are also emblematic of their capacities in developing ideas and a serious proof of their musical versatility…Somewhere between Old-School and Thrash-core (“Wretched”).

Maybe, i can reproach to this EP untitled "Devolve" is a relative monotony in the angry barking and yelling of Mr Jay Taylor who possess a great aptitude in deep, hoarse and aggressive throat rendition…I believe it's more a specificity of their sound than a real weakness.

Normally ,I’m not interested in reviewing Eps, indeed I truly enjoy much better a band and its music in its full plenitude mode. However with the new "dematerialized / digital only" music rule and the new direction of the music publishing market, the EP format, is trendy and cool again, and with Thirty three minutes of ardent running time, I should admit that finally it’s a wise action for a new group such as MUTAGENOCIDE in order to introduce themselves to the incredulous Metal world.

Those six tracks are a good overview of their qualities, it’s time for a full length effort, still waiting eagerly for their first album to confirm the talent that I felt in this passionate fistful of savagery, madness, hate and power!
