My Funeral - Thrash Destruction

My Funeral
Thrash Destruction
by Michael "MettleAngel" Francisco at 15 April 2013, 5:48 PM

I suppose even if I were the last man standing after the upcoming terror, and an assassin had selected to slay them all, it would quickly become my funeral if I did not appreciate the death thrash kill and whiplash tactics of “Thrash Destruction”. Finland's MY FUNERAL want to be contenders, but legions of others have more capability. I do like my daily dose of Thrash, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to appreciate newer acts, when all I want to do is hear the re-masters of those acts who left their indelible mark on me in the past.

This album is decent, and fans of BYWAR, VIOLENTOR, LOST SOCIETY, HEADSPIN, etc. will acknowledge their feigned Satanic Black antics and alcoholic madness. However, they could never be as drunk as INTOXICATED, or come close to making me as attracted to their age of violence, even if held under the guillotine.

The call of war is pronounced with “Into Fire” followed by the SODOM like nuclear thunder of “Thrash Winter”. “Man Hunting Season” and “Killing Spree” remind me of the mindless one might kill mindset of GOREFEST, with a hint of BERSERKER from Pakistan, or MEZARKABUL from Turkey. Many of the tracks are mediocre, but the best of the bunch would be “Thrashman Standing” and “Deathrash Till Death”. Hannu's intense drumming stands out most prominent in the mix. I am also reminded of the style of WITCHBURNER and DEW-SCENTED. Guitarists Joonas Kiviviemi and Aku Korhonen seem accomplished but Ilkka Sepponen's cracked smile singing is just not relentless enough to sate my whetted appetite. Perhaps fellow natives CHILDREN OF BODOM and STONE are influential in the carnal construction. Fans of THE CROWN may also find merit in songs like “Satanic Black Magic”, the title track, or “Slay Them All”, but most of the melodies and solos need to be more abundant, and have some level of staying power, corrupting the listener with a real license to spill blood and bludgeon.

Overall, I find myself wanting to play EXUMER, DEATHROW, and INTOXICATED, and not to be tortured to death by this banality. Sorry MY FUNERAL, the riffs are there, but the black magic inspiration and word choices need serious alteration. Now I must close the open casket, pass on reading the obituary and reciting the threnody, and seek my Death Thrash elsewhere.
