My Grimace - Grim Serenades Award winner

My Grimace
Grim Serenades
by Lotty Whittingham at 29 June 2015, 8:16 PM

Whether you are becoming accustomed to the heavier side of the musical spectrum or if you are emerging deeper into this beautiful yet dark genre there is one country that pops up on the community’s mind. The country being spoken of here is Finland; the famous inexplicable breeding ground for Metal has given us great legends such as NIGHTWISH, ENSIFERUM, TURISAS….needless to say the list is endless. The latest band that will undoubtedly join this list are Melodic Death Metal warriors MY GRIMACE and one thing that is certain, they do not mess around when it comes to brutality.

MY GRIMACE have been concocting a dangerous, powerful weapon that they have unleashed onto the battlefield giving a strong blast on the unsuspecting ears of the Metal community. This abomination unleashed and creating havoc is their debut album “Grim Serenades”.

From the moment you press the play button,  brutality hits you hard like an excruciating punch across the face; each track lures the listener in with that famous false sense of security out of their shelters and into the open ready to be ambushed by the viciousness and destruction of their raw sound.

What’s so admirable about this ingenious technique is the mixture of so many elements from different subgenres of Metal is put together so beautifully. The best example of this in action is in the track “Reveal Nothing” one moment you have the melodic guitars alongside the perfect balance of harsh and clean vocals that Melodic Death is best known for. This is then followed by the high piercing screams of Black Metal. When experimenting with more than genre it can often go wrong; in this case the outcome is spot on.

So there you have it; another brutally brilliant offering from the best breeding ground for Heavy Metal music and this album is solid evidence of this opinion. They are a band everyone should be adding to their bands to check out list.
