Nattehimmel – The Night Sky Beckons

Nattehimmel
The Night Sky Beckons
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 01 August 2022, 6:09 AM

NATTEHIMMEL (Norsk for ‘Night Sky’) is a direct descendent of early IN THE WOODS - injecting new life into the early 90’s Black/Pagan Metal sound which they helped to shape. Founded in January 2022, the band immediately began to assemble and finish various songs that had been in progress and recorded five tracks of their unique style to send to friends. Hammerheart Records immediately recognized the quality and heritage of the music, and a limited three-track Demo tape “The Night Sky Beckons” is now released by Hammerheart Records.

Regarding “Astrologer,” although the instrumentation is thick like Black Metal, the vocals begin clean and then turn harsh. Keyboards can be heard filling those sparse blank spots. The song has a few traditional elements of the FWOBM, but also a good deal of original sounds to go with it. “Mountain of the Northern Kings” is another sad and depressing offering that begins with clean vocal harmonies, and a stalwart riff with heavy accents. When the harsh vocals arrive, depression turns to anger. Back come the clean vocals as the subject wrestles with his feelings.

The title track closes the three-song Demo. It’s another song that borders between despair and hatred, and the band is solid at holding this fine line. Again, depression gives way to resolve, as the night sky can play tricks on the mind. Why does it beckon, and to what end? We won’t get answers on this Demo, but I hope the band has more up their sleeve, because this is a solid release that shows that the band are not just resting on the sounds that plague the FWOBM followers, as all too many of their peers do. Indeed, this is a promising take from a band that is not afraid to pave their own way in the genre.
