Nick Hellfort - The Mask Within

Nick Hellfort
The Mask Within

From the mind of Nicolaj Ruhnow, singer of the band TOKYO BLADE, comes the new solo project, NICK HELLFORT.

It took a few listens to completely wrap my brain around what Ruhnow was going for here. I'm still not sure I've gotten the whole point of this record, truthfully. This is a very hard record to listen to in spots.

The first thing that jumps out at you about this record is the vocals. They are very high pitched and almost remind one of KING DIAMOND, yet not nearly as talented. The melodies just don't grab you on a lot of these songs and make you want to listen. I know this is something that no singer or songwriter really wants to hear from a review, but it's my honest opinion.

The second thing that jumps out about this record is the bass playing of Marco Bachle. It's honestly the high point of this record. The bass tones and rhythms that he uses here are phenomenal. It's really what makes this listenable to me. I could listen to this record for this aspect alone. The guitars are also well done and add great value to this record.

Overall, I think this is an ok beginning for these guys and it seems they have talent to work with. I'd personally tone the vocals down to a lower register and work on the melodies a bit. With more work on that aspect, I think the band would have something.
