Niels Vejlyt - The Predator (CD)

Niels Vejlyt
The Predator
by Michael Dalakos at 24 April 2006, 6:35 AM

We are living in hard times for heroes generally. Guitar heroes unfortunately are not an exception to this rule. As the majority of Metal fans around the world turn their back to the traditional forms of heavy music and adopt more extreme listening interests, it seems that the space for virtuosos of the six string is running shorter by the minute.
Niels Vejlyt is one of those neoclassic guitarists that have a thing about Mr. Blackmore's and Mr. Malmsteen's sound. I'll tell you: he is damn good in what he does but unfortunately time caught up with him. The album runs at more than 45 minutes and the majority of the songs can be considered good in terms. However nothing really blew me away like Rising Force did 2000 years ago. Though I can't really say that I got bored while listening to this instrumental piece of work, in the end I couldn't manage to recall any tune after the listening process.
Another problem is the weak production of the album, or should I better say the average mastering? Probably there is a problem in the mastering of the album because I noticed some differences between the sound level on several songs. And though Niels has managed to get a clean and distinct sound for each instrument, the overall package can be considered as thick and one-dimensional.
In conclusion, this work might have something to say to those loyal to neoclassic instrumental albums. But seriously: how many of those are left?
