Nightrage - A New Disease Is Born (CD)

A New Disease Is Born
by Yiannis Dafopoulos at 25 February 2007, 8:20 AM

I am hesitating to place this album in my CD player for some time now. I really love this band and I don't know what will I come across when I listen to this CD, since important members have left the band and many changes have occurred. I can't delay it anymore; it is time for the review. It is the time to listen to A New Disease Is Born. Let's see what we have here…

NIGHTRAGE were formed by guitar hero Gus G. (ex-MYSTIC PROPHECY, FIREWIND, ex-DREAM EVIL) and Marios Iliopoulos (ex-EXHUMATION) in 2000, in Greece, and featured members like vocalist Tomas Lindberg (ex-AT THE GATES) and drummer Fotis Giannakopoulos (ex-SEPTIC FLESH, DEVILWORX). The fact that the only remaining former member is Marios made have some doubts about the quality of their new album. Why do I have to be right so many times? Goodbye great Swedish Death Metal…

The last sentence you read above is what describes the new NIGHTRAGE album. It still has the Swedish Death Metal melody but I want you to guess something. Which Metal genre is clearly influenced by the Swedish Death Metal scene and is really popular nowadays? Unfortunately, you guessed right, I am talking about Metalcore. NIGHTRAGE have added more melodic touches in their music and the classic Metalcore drumming and vocals. Lindberg please come back to save the day! I had this feeling right from the start, I knew that the departure of Gus G. and Tomas Lindberg would affect the band negatively. The guitar hero managed to make NIGHTRAGE a great name in Swedish melodic Death Metal by producing two great albums, Sweet Vengeance (2003) and Descend Into Chaos (2005). His departure is more than obvious since the riffing has not the glorious aura it had when Gus was shredding like a beast. Do not forget that ARCH ENEMY had asked Gus to join them! His decision to leave every other band and concentrate on FIREWIND is totally respectable, but what about what he left behind? A New Disease Is Born even has some clean vocal parts! What the fuck? It is definitely not a bad album, it is a really nice album, but I am a listener with ideology and I won't settle for a band that tries to sell 1000 albums more. Because we are talking about a commercial move! I should have expected something like this when I learned that the band joined Lifeforce Records! Great production just like every Swedish Death Metal/Metalcore release out there and brutal vocals that are really nice but of course cannot be compared to Lindberg's ferocious singing style! Lindberg is the man!

If NIGHTRAGE was a newly formed Metalcore band, I would say that this is a really nice album, but guess what… It is NOT a newly formed Metalcore band! I am disappointed but at least I expected something like this. When I listen to such kind of stuff from bands that I adore, I can be extremely severe, so…
