Nihilistic Legion - The Hunt Award winner

Nihilistic Legion
The Hunt
by Michael Coyle at 06 May 2016, 10:05 PM

NIHILISTIC LEGION is a one man Black/Death Metal band from Israel. Formed in 2004, the band has only ever released a demo entitled “Nihilistic Legion”, which was recorded on December 28th 2014. In 2015, the band has worked to create an EP, which with any hope will lead to greater things along the road.

Starting off we have the EP's first track “Opening The Gates”. From the start, we are given a bleak opening of rough guitar work, which opens the track off in a very interesting way, demonstrating ideas based on the original demos of some of Black Metal’s earlier bands, while at the same time, being able to mix in something new with something old creating a mix that really works to demonstrate the effort and idea that the band have wanted to put into the music. I find that the song itself is a great way of introducing the material to fans of this class of heavy, gritty Black/Death Metal, which really gives us a great start to this already interesting EP.

Going into the second track, we have “Destroying The Temples Of The Gods”. Starting differently then the previous track, we have a fast opener bringing us in with full force; the vocals that this song demonstrates are heavy and dark, bringing together two elements of the extreme metal tree, creating an evil, if not intense, experience for both myself and any listener curious enough to listen to this EP. The track itself does what it says by creating an atmosphere that works in all aspects to what this track has to offer.

Going through to the EP's third song, we have the title track “The Hunt”. For what the title tells us, we have a track of extreme terror where we have a demon on the run, preparing for a hunt of souls before him, the song brings us back towards what the band have already presented in terms to their speed and creativity, creating a track that blends the best of two worlds and forcing together, a dark element that crushes hard and doesn't let loose it's prey. “The Hunt” is a track that, in every way, gives us a taste of old school Black Metal at it's best, bringing us guitar and drum work that is both incredible and fascinating to listen to at the same time, creating what is by far the best track on this EP.

We come to the final track of the EP entitled “Son of Lies”. Unlike the previous tracks, this song goes head first, without any means of stopping, which is perfect for this EP, as we have already seen songs that open with a riff head in, but really with this track, we get the full beast at it's best preparing to rip open it's enemy with pleasure to kill. This song is a great combination of fast riffs and intense drumbeats that annihilate on first contact.
