Nile - At the Gate of Sethu Award winner

At the Gate of Sethu
by Karila "Femme Metale" Shannis at 04 June 2012, 4:31 PM

NILE’s seventh studio release entitled “At The Gate Of Sethu” is nothing less than a spell-binding work of exotic Heavy Metal artistry. This album will whisk you off to the deepest realms of your imagination while simultaneously pounding your ears with fascinating complex Death Metal riffs that will resonate in your head all the way to the afterlife.

The bewitching begins with “Enduring the Eternal Molestation of Flame”, where spine-tingling whispers and indigenous instrumentation lead in to the agile riffing of Karl Sanders and Dallas Toller-Wade. The barbaric bellowing of Karl Sanders looms over each track in vile superiority and will make your skin crawl in a sort of brutal bewitchment. “The Fiends Who Come to Steal the Magick of the Deceased” is one of the most incredible tracks on the album.  The chorus of this song is recited as a powerful incantation, and it is guaranteed to have crowds shouting once the band tours with these songs! The song also showcases the flawless combination of phantom-like vocals, ferocious Progressive Death riffs, the heart-pounding bass lines of Todd Ellis, and the eternally punishing drum work of George Kollias. Speaking of George Kollias, the most awesome drum lines stand out in the song “Inevitable Degradation of Flesh”—very reminiscent of Inferno’s ferocity on BEHEMOTH’s “Apostasy” album.

This album is best listened to from beginning to end because these songs are arranged like a seamless orchestral piece that flows from movement to movement in the smoothest of motions.  There are epic compositions like “Slaves of Xul” and “Ethno-Musicological Cannibalism” that consist only of indigenous desert instruments. These tracks serve as a reminder of why NILE is so unique to the Death Metal world: these soundtrack-like songs paint an enrapturing environment around the listener. These songs create so much dimension and depth and round out this album as a magical masterpiece.

Now when I describe this album as a “magical masterpiece,” I’m not talking about “rainbows and unicorns” magic. I’m talking “Secret Cult Ov Ancient Magi Conjuring Spells That Would Turn the Pyramids of Egypt on Their Pointy Ends and Leave the Great Sphinx with its Jaw Dropped Open” kind of magic.  Hey, sounds like a new track for the next album!
